United Steel Service Installs Hi-Production Heavy Gauge Slitter

Turret Head Slitter: Uniserv's line is equipped with a "Turret Head" slitter equipped with two quick-change 12" slitter heads. Because the free arbors on a Turret Slitter offer unobstructed access, the 17" diameter x 1" thick knives and 14" diameter spacers are easier and faster to load and remove than with any other slitter head design. Once the new slitter tooling set-up is prepared, the heads can be exchanged in a matter of minutes. In addition, valuable floor space is conserved as the Turret Slitter tooling station is behind the slitting line, making use of floor space that would otherwise be unusable.

Shear: Precision sheets and blanks are produced by a high speed overdriven mechanical Shear located adjacent to the Servo Feed and immediately ahead of the Sheet Stacker. The Shear is equipped with an AC motor that drives a flywheel at 220 RPM via multiple "V" belts. The flywheel is coupled to a crankshaft that drives the upper shear ram through a shearing cycle in less than half a second. A heavy-duty pneumatic clutch-brake engages and disengages the crankshaft from the flywheel causing the shear ram to cut and return. Four edge shear blades are installed at a minimal rake angle to prevent shear induced twist in short sheets. Horizontal shear blade clearance is adjustable via pushbutton for various gauge and shear strength materials. Because of the extremely short cycle time, the mechanical Shear offers unmatched productivity when producing short blanks.

Turret Recoiler: The newest Uniserv slitting line is installed with a highly efficient double end "Turret Recoiler" equipped with two rewind drums and two overarm separators. The main benefits of the Turret Recoiler is that it allows OD coil banding to be accomplished "off-line" while the line is running, significantly improving heavy gauge and narrow width productivity. In addition, recoiler drum filler plates to produce a different coil ID and re-tooled overarm separator arbors can be installed while the slitting line continues in operation, further increasing productivity. A three-ratio 250 HP combination outboard support and recoiler drive provides the power to operate at 150, 450, and 600 FPM line speeds, depending upon the slitting load.

Robert K. Hutchison, Vice President, United Steel Service, Inc.

"Our latest slitting line, with its ability to process 7 cuts in 3/8", over 20 cuts in 3/16", and 30 cuts in .090", ideally complements the 60,000# x 60" x .150"-.010" Braner slitting line we installed just over a year ago. The decision to install another Braner Turret Head slitting line was made easy because our satisfaction with Braner's performance during our previous slitter project. Our latest Braner has proven to be a very efficient workhorse that has enhanced our ability to provide our heavier gauge carbon and stainless customers with a premium quality product. We are just as pleased with our latest Braner slitter as we are with the first."
